BJJ Class 161
One and a half, plus a little extra gi class.
I came in, warmed up a little and rolled with the same guy for an hour and a half. We started light, no strength, just technique, and progressed to regular rolling gradually. Afterward, I rolled with another guy for about 10 minutes. Learned a few tips, then left and went home.
It was a great session!! The two guys I rolled with were my peers, fellow blue belts. They both had more technique than me but I balanced it out by having more weight so it was pretty equal. Some key things I remember from the rolls:
- To paraphrase Master Mansur, I “need to be like a lion and relentlessly pursue my prey and only stop for a breather when my prey is dead”. (Read about the seminar where he said that here) I need to keep going until I have a good position. When in a bad situation, I have to go 200% until I escape and get a better position
- Against someone that likes to take the back, I have to be more careful and really not give any openings (like in kesa gatame side-control)
- I still have a harder time passing and maintaining side control against shorter guys
- I should hook down on an opponents leg more with my own foot when I pass. I usually forget to, but doing so helps a lot
- I’m not conscious enough of omoplata attempts on me. I guess people don’t go for it much so I haven’t developed a better “omoplata awareness” and defense
- My open guard sucks and has no game
- I should try to go for a forward leaning armbar more, rather than the usual backward leaning armbar. Oh, I like armbars!!

Interesting blog posts man. So have you been recording since class 1? Nice job on getting your blue belt if so. I did Judo for a good few years then recently switched to BJJ (have my first stripe!!
).
