BJJ Class 159

Evening gi class. I came in early for the second class (or late for the first). And started warming up on the side.

I was able to joined in on the second class, which simply flowed from the first. We were doing the BJ Penn sweep and following that with a quick transition to get side control. We then did a variation where the legs are scissored and then another variation when you can’t hook the knee so you plant your foot from the hip to your opponents armpit, rotate on your back 180 degrees grab the foot and stretch out thus sweeping your opponent and quickly following them to get side-control or mount.

Then we did a drill where you do any of those three sweeps non-stop for about two minutes. That is tiring on both ends, doing the sweeps and picking yourself up to stand again and again!!

Then we jumped into rolling. I was first paired with a tall white belt that had been training several months – I was surprised by how many armbars I was able to pull off. Then I went with a shorter white-belt. He was tougher, and I got just a few arm bars. I was also able to submit him with a move that I’ll call the reverse crucifix. From side-control you go into kesa-gatame, hook an arm and a leg (putting yourself in a crucifix) then arching your back while bring grabbing your thighs and bringing your knees together. I actually learned this submission from the last class, which was the Master Francisco Mansur seminar.

I went next with a blue belt that’s been a blue belt for awhile. Things were flipped as he swept me left and right. I need to work on my butterfly sweep counters and escapes. A new but skilled blue belt was next. He quickly submitted me twice, then we went back and forth. I rolled very lightly with a tiny woman next.

Then the whole class went into king-of-hill guard pass training. I passed guard and was passed a few times – too many rounds I can’t remember.

My most obvious learning for me from this class: I need to train more! My cardio and techniques are lagging behind!
