BJJ Class 115

Early afternoon class again.  It was a flat hour and a half this time. I got the go ahead to make up for my many missed classes (I was going once a week when I was paying for twice), so I really will be training more often now and I hope my game will go up a few notches.

Class started with light warm-ups, then shrimping and rolling up and down the mats.  Then we went straight to techniques.

Technique was a side control/mount reversal.  As your opponent goes from side control to mount, you bridge up and reverse him to get top side control.  After that was a technique to get half-guard and/or get top side control from being underneath side control.  Bridge into your opponent and as he pushes forward to keep you flat on your back, use his force to lift his leg up and get half-guard.  From there you can scoop under his leg and sweep him to get top position.  Or just go for the reversal straight away.  Getting the half-guard was tricky and never felt right, but going for the reversal was much easier to perform.

Several rounds of positional sparring was next. The first was side control.  Top person would go for mount and the bottom person would try to escape.  Positions would reset when ever someone achieved a better position.  After a round for each person, the next round was the same but the person on top could go for submissions.  Then we did mount with no submissions, then mount with submissions.  With each person doing a three (or was it five?) minute round each, that was eight rounds of rolling already.  Then we had a long, non-stop 25 minute regular roll.

What I did right:
I think I did fairly well with side control.  Was able to maintain control when transitioning between side control, north-south, and mount.  I kept finding armbars.  Before I gassed myself, I pulled off a sweet scissor sweep or two and also did the BJ Penn sweep from guard.  When I was gassed and was being smothered on the bottom, I defended ok and was able to relax, breathe, and avoid panicking.

What I did wrong:
My top side control is better than my mount, it really sucks.  I really need to work on that, I get rolled off almost too easily.  My rear mount is even worse.  During the 25 minute roll, I was going fairly well and got a few armbars. Halfway in, I got rear mount, and took a second to catch my breathe.  That was it – stopping to catch my breathe did more bad than good.  It was like my body relaxed and then refused to get out of relaxation.  The rest of the roll was me playing bottom and keeping half-guard.

I didn’t get to play guard much since my sparring partner was really intent on working his guard.  I did get the chance a few times and did fairly well.  Then my body went to sleep. Oh well.

Great class, am tired.  Time for school!
