BJJ Class 113

Missed monday night’s class as I had a dental appointment I’d completely forgotten about. It’s a good thing they called to remind me. I had brought my jiu-jitsu gear with me with the intention of training after going to the dentist, but my post-visit cavity-related half-numb mouth made me think it was better to go home instead. I could just see myself unintentionally drooling all over my training partners or an accidental knee or elbow knocking my new fillings off.

So anyway, I went to the tuesday class. I was late, as is usual for tuesdays, and started to warm-up. By then it was time for rolling so myself and another tardy BJJ’er paired up to warm up with the takedown the class was drilling beforehand. It was one of those takedowns that after you take your partner down, they’re in the perfect position to take you down. So you end up alternating taking each other down and picking yourself up. That picking yourself up part, that’s very tiring…

I had three rolls afterward, which were positional sparring – standing guard passes against open guard, with the position resetting if I pass guard or they sweep. I know I passed guard a few times, but I can’t remember if I ever got to maintain side control. I think I did a few times, but can’t exactly recall. Anyway, the rolls were against a brown belt, a blue, and white.

What I did right: After a few bad attempts on each person, I eventually started going for the pass where I hold both legs together. I was able to get to side control or cause my opponents have to stop their attacks and defend. I also remembered my head and kept it pressed against my opponents.

What I did wrong: Half the time, my grab-both-legs-together pass attempts would just stop as my training partners would post on me. A few times, I would push the posting arms out of the way, other times, it would lead to stalemates – I need to know how to best proceed from that situation. Generally, my spider guard passing needs a lot of work.

After the positional sparring, I did one more roll with another whitebelt. He was really wanting to work his bottom game. This guy has progressed so quickly in the game – yes, one of those mental sponges. The roll was fun. Worked topgame, got an armbar and almost completed a wrestler-type forearm side-control choke. I named it that since it was a wrestler that taught me that. I’ll try to look for a video of that (or illustrate it) in the future.  I was reversed twice, one was when I was trying to move us away from the wall and was quickly submitted by an americana, the second was when time was up. Oh well, I didn’t get to touch my goals at all tonight.

Finally, today’s discovery: a tuesday 45 minute class is more tiring than 2 + hours on a monday!
