Armbar from standing and from the knees

These two technique are from the earlier class in BJJ Class 111.  Ok… 


Nogi will be doing the armbar on Boarder.  From standing position, Nogi grips Boarder’s right lapel and elbow.


Nogi steps his right foot near Boarder’s left foot.


Nogi sits/falls on his back and keeps his grips on Boarder.


Using the momentum of his fall and keeping his grips, Nogi brings his legs and hips up of the mat…


…and locks in the armbar.  It’s more important to lock the position in properly at this point than to attempt to sweep Boarder down.  Nogi also releases his grips as he is going to finish the armbar.  Also important is how Nogi’s left knee wraps around Boarder’s head


Though not so clear in this pic and the previous one, the position of Nogi’s right knee is important.  It must be pressed against Boarder, as it helps secure the arm, and I think could also be a partial defense against a stack.


Another angle of the same shot, Nogi’s right foot should be hooking on to Boarder’s body in the armpit area.


Although the armbar is complete in the previous picture, Nogi can sweep Boarder too.  If Boarder doesn’t want to go down, Nogi can use his right arm to grab Boarder’s left leg to help him sweep.


Squeeze knees, lift hips, use arms, Nogi complete the armbar.

From the knees variation


A variation of this technique is to do the armbar straight from the kneeling position.  Nogi takes the same grips on Boarder’s elbow and lapel.


Same shot as above, but from the other side.


Nogi pushes at Boarder with his right arm…


…and steps his right foot over across Boarder’s knee…


… and, using some of the forward force that Boarder exerts to counter Nogi’s push, Nogi rolls onto his back…


…and brings his hips and legs up…


…and puts his legs in for the armbar.


Just like in the standing variation, the technique is done here.


But Nogi can take Boarder down anyway.  Which I think is better to do, since Boarder’s likely defense is to stack Nogi.

      Yeah, exactly monday night – I do train in NYC.

      I was wondering when someone from the same school would find this blog – but then again, I keep this thing anonymous and don’t talk about it. You can probably guess who I am in class based on this site (injured shoulder).
