BJ Penn sweep from open guard
This is the exact same sweep me and my friend had a great time drilling back in BJJ Class 108.
We did pay attention to the arm grab that BJ demonstrates in the start of the video. Use a baseball bat grip with no-gi or a simple sleeve grab will do – and if I remember right, it doesn’t matter which arm you grab, it’ll help with the takedown either way.
Finding this video saves me from needing to take pictures of my Snowboard Instructors doing it. Needless to say, I’ve forgotten just about every technique that I had previously wanted to illustrate. Oh well. This does drive down the reason why I do those pix and this blog – to remember techniques learned (and keep track of training progress).
Anyway, hope you like the video.

[...] Situational sparring followed next. One side defends open guard and the other tries to pass. 30 seconds were given for each side with each person alternating. I don’t know how many times we switched, but it was very good training. The time limit pumps you up, gets you excited, and gasses you quicker. My coach said it was very good training for that. I did the situational rolling with the same bigger dude, that I later found out outweighed me by 50lbs. The first several rounds of the first class I did very well, able to pass guard and defend . Later it on, fatigue set in and the weight difference was really making a, well, a difference. I was surprised I was outweighed by so much since he was moving around rather quickly when he was playing top. Late in the second class, I managed to do a modified BJ Penn Sweep. [...]
