BJJ Class 107 – Drained

I haven’t been getting much sleep lately. So much so that I was dozing off at my desk at work about 40 minutes before training started. But I still went anyway.

I didn’t get to warm-up as much as usual before class, but I don’t think it would’ve mattered anyway. Light jogging then some light stretching started the class, then we broke off into pairs and started working on a seated half-guard sweep against a standing opponent. It was a really nice sweep and used leverage very well. I definitely want to illustrate this technique.

Eight rounds of specific sparring followed. And needless to say, I was drained – I typically get up and sit on the side to rest after rolling, but this time I would just lay down on the mat between rounds and not even try to pick myself up.

Rolling was open/closed guard defense and sweep versus guard passing. I did pretty well, much better than I thought. My previous thoughts on my poor sweeps were somewhat put to rest. I was still unable to pull off successful scissor sweeps against white belts a level above me and now I kind of know why: I just have the wrong angle/leverage points, don’t know how to correct it, and my opponents act on passing guard too quickly. I did pull of the nice closed guard sweep we went over in class a few times in previous classes. I was also able to pass guard a few times and I’m experimenting with the different kinds of knee and leg grips to use. My top half-guard game is weak and I usually get reversed while working on passing. My bottom half-guard is all about survival and at best just leads to a time wasting stalemate. And in my last 2 rolls I was owned by a tall whitebelt whom I couldn’t do a thing against. I’ve really got to learn what to do when they get grips on your gi pant’s legs and stuff…

Anyway, ous!!
