BJJ Class 140
Early afternoon gi class. It was the only one I had gone to this week. I’ve just been busy.
I moved this week from the place I’ve been renting for over six years to the place my fiance has owned and been living in for about four years. Packing up took a long time and the unpacking process is taking even longer. On top of that I’ve been slacking from schoolwork (yet another paper) and I’ve still got to file my taxes. It’s a good thing I’m unemployed (although I’m a few weeks behind my job hunting), since it would just be way too difficult to do all this (and the wedding stuff too) if I were fully employed.
I felt tremendously lazy this this morning and was seriously considering skipping the jits in order to work on my to do list. I checked the calendar and realized that besides today, I would have only one other chance to train before I go into my “wedding day abstinence from training to avoid injuries and bruises”. And so I decided to train.
And I’m glad I did. It was a great session. All the heavy lifting of moving boxes and bags must’ve helped because I wasn’t as tired as I think I should’ve been.
Class started with light self warm-ups, then we did a heavy group warm-up that ended up with partner guard pass defense going down the mat. We then continued to drill a lot of pass defenses and then a similar side control escape. All the techniques had guard the following in similar:
- bridge
- shrimp
- switch to go on your stomach
- block arms/legs/hips
- go up on your knees and attack/defend
After was several one minute rounds of guard passing drills. There was three rounds of defending guard, and six of passing. I’ll skip the what I did right/wrong thing this time. I don’t remember much of either. I don’t think I made any big glaring mistakes and I was able to both pass guard and defend my guard. Not that I was invincible — guard did get passed a few times and I wasn’t able to pass with all my attempts. It was just very good training.
And so that was it. Now time to go back to my to do list.

What school in NY do you train at? Have you ever gone out of the country to train MMA? Brazil? Thailand? etc.
I’m looking for some good info on BJJ schools in Brazil. Any info you have would be great. Thanks.

I train with Marcos Santos… I haven’t trained anywhere outside the country, sorry. I’d suggest the Gracie schools in Brazil, of course
