BJJ Class 137
Early afternoon class. I made it, I actually made it. People were welcoming me back. It was fun. And a great class.
Warm-ups were long and made me have to catch my breath. There was a lot of general calisthenics and grappling specific exercises. Class proper was all drills with no specific technique taught.
Everything was done in rounds by pairs, from stand-up all the way to ground fighting. First set was grip fighting, then controlling your opponent while standing, then take-down setups, then takedowns, then rolling from stand-up, then open guard, seated guard, half-guard, and lastly regular rolling from the knees. I paired up with a higher level blue belt for all the drills and rolling.
Overall it was a great tiring class. I was happy that I didn’t injure myself during standup, as usually happens with stand-up. No ankle, arm, or any kind of injuries. After class I didn’t want to jinx it, so I did more rolling starting from the knees.
What I did right:
- I discovered my favorite throw, the hip throw variation where I go down on one or both knees. Set them up nice too
- I managed to do a few sweeps, reversals, and passes
- In regular rolling i seem to give up my back a lot, which I never did before, but I’m defending well
- I went to BJJ!!!
What I did wrong:
- Stand-up definitely needs work
- My open and seated guard are horrible. It’s hard to say it, but it’s worse than my half-guard. So they’re downright terrible
- I need to remember to immediately put my head (and weight) down when doing a pass, especially if I’m doing a standing or high kneeling guard pass
- My head exposure to guillotines is still there, but I’m getting better at defending them
- Seem to give my back too often. Or rather it gets taken a lot
I asked for some help with half-guard tactics with the blue belt I was paired with. Cool. It was mostly stuff that I’ve gone through before, but can’t remember or haven’t implemented in my game.

Glad to read you’re back training and defending the guillotines! Heh heh.

I love morning or early afternoon classes. If I could I would train at 5 in the morning.

yeah it’s great not to tap to them as much!!
I used to love training early – back in college I used to train 3x a week at 6am and once at 9 for the taekwondo varsity. I don’t think I have the kind of discipline to wake up so early anymore though
