Marcelo Garcia seminar at my school and why I’m not going
Marcelo Garcia is one of the, if not the top BJJ fighter out there today. He is going to my BJJ school to give two days (sessions of) seminars and I’ve decided not to go.
It definitely would be cool to attend a Marcelo Garcia seminar and there’s a lot of stuff I could learn from such a high caliber grappler. But the same techniques I learn will likely be the same that I’ll end up forgetting.
I’ve only been to one Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminar and it confirmed the main criticism I’ve heard from others about attending them: too many techniques compressed in such a short time = not remembering most of them. Seminars have their place in learning and training Jiu Jitsu, I just feel like they’re not for me yet. I’m still trying to get my basics together. Maybe when I feel that I’m more foundationally sound, then I’ll go to all the seminars I can…
But my main reason for skipping this one is more financial than anything else. I’m unemployed. And I’m getting married – - in several weeks, seven weeks to go as of this writing. This means that I have to put every available dollar I have into paying caterers, photographers, locations, and anyone else that inflates their prices when they hear the magic word “wedding”. The sound may as well be “ka-ching!!!”
Enough of the money rant, I still have to find musicians!!

While I agree that you should really only attand seminars when you have a good level of basics, I think you should go. Firstly, you can get your picture taken with him, maybe ask him some questions about BJJ which you could put on your blog, secondly, you will get the chnace to see him roll, and possibly spar with him yourself. You will learn much just by experiencing this.
