BJJ Class 134

Early afternoon no-gi class.  It was nice to hit the mats again…

Did some solo stretching before the class started with warm-ups.  It helps that even though I had a three week break, I got to snowboard all through-out President’s Day weekend last week, so I wasn’t too out of it.

Technique was a half-guard pass and a few variations.  I started off not liking the technique, but the more we drilled it and a few variations, I liked it more and more.

Situational half-guard sparring followed.  It was two rounds with each partner having two minutes to play bottom.  It was pass versus reverse & submit.  I was paired with the same white belt for all rolls.  When I played bottom, I was able to do reversals and pass when playing top.  My half-guard wasn’t passed, but I was reversed one time when I tried half-guard on the right, which is the side I’m not used to (and which I should work on).

When we started rolling, he got a submission right of the bat, getting me with a guillotine from standing then pulling guard – my head defense weakness needs work.  I was able to do a variety of americanas and armbars afterward.  After a bit of those, I decided to change pace and work on defense, or survival according to Ribeiro’s book, Jiu-Jitsu University (which I got to browse through in a bookstore.  It’s great, I want one!!).  So I started doing that and was just defending for a few minutes when a purple belt came over and said “C’mon, you can get out of that!!”  So I did.  Oh well.  Next time I should just try that from the start.  I remember doing that in class before way back in BJJ class 91.  I called it the jedi exercise.

What I did right:

  • It felt like I did a lot right, but I was rolling with a whitebelt, so I can’t be sure

What I did wrong:

  • Didn’t have the chance to roll with any blue belts and up or anyone heavier
  • I was reversed from top half-guard.  I need to pay attention to my half-guard base more
  • I was guillotined.  I talked about a weakness in head defense back in BJJ Class 130.  I need to work on that weakness

So that was class.  I didn’t get to roll with any other belts or anyone heavier than me.  Next time….

And no goals on this one, I still have to do my January Goals review and come up with my new goals.
