BJJ Class 131
Oh man, I was so gassed! Since my birthday gift for AG, jewelry making classes with pick up and drop off service (I’ll take her there and pick her up), started and will be on wednesday nights, I decided to shift my wednesday training schedule. I won’t be doing the early wednesday afternoon classes and will be doing the wednesday night classes instead. That’s good for me since that means I’ll be getting more mat time since I’ll be able to take two back to back classes instead of just the one class in the afternoon. It also means I’ll be really gassed for most of the second class, which is exactly what happened.
Also, I wanted to clarify something regarding my numbering of class numbers. I think in 2007, I would number back to back classes separately, they would count as two or one each. In 2008, I started numbering them as just one, since I did a lot of one-and-a-half classes. I like that format better and will continue to count it that way. So, BJJ Class 131 is two back-to-back classes.
First class started with warm-ups than moved to drills. It was an escape to when an opponent passes your guard and you quickly shrimp out and go on your knees. After that was situational sparring, with one side just playing open guard and the other trying to pass. I was paired off with a brown belt that made a tap clinic out of his time with guard and passed my guard like a hot knife through butter. I went next with a fairly new whitebelt, and I basically did to him what the brown belt did to me, only not as smooth and quick. Oh, and I did a lot of sweeps, not submissions. I was bonked on the lip during the last roll, and I know have a purple, swollen lip. Oh well, all part of the game…
Second class started with warm-ups too, then went on to techniques. Techniques started from the same techniques that we went though in the afternoon class in BJJ Class 129. This time, it was a counter for two possible counters that your opponent could do, either push and put his knee on the mat to try to get mount, or put his knee on the other side, to try to get side control. After that was the same open guard/guard passing situational rolling. I was paired with two white belts that have been taking BJJ for a while, but I basically did the same as in the last class, though things happened in a slower pace . I was getting gassed with the second white belt and the roll progressed like the previous rolls, but at an even slower pace for when I was playing open guard. I managed to pass just a few times, since I was really gassed by then.
After that was situational sparring king of the hill style. There are about five people as “base” that play open guard against those doing guard passing. If their guard gets passed, the passer becomes “base” and the other guy is out. If the passer gets swept or submitted, he’s out. People in a line then jump in to be a passer whenever someone goes out. I didn’t do well here. I was dead tired and somehow lost my techniques. I wasn’t able to pass anyone’s guard, even when against high level white belts. I was swept and submitted by a lot of triangles
.
What I did right:
- Before the king of the hill, I felt like I was doing a lot of things right. I was passing and was able to sweep a lot of times. Of course, that’s not counting the rolls with the brown belt.
What I did wrong:
- Cardio man!! Mine sucks. Hopefully doing more of the back-to-back classes will bring my stamina and endurance up.
- I tapped to triangles! Triangle defense needs work. Two of those subs were set-up with arm drags. Need to work on my triangle defense.
- I feel like I should have had a better passing game.
Ok, it’s late and I’m tired. And that’s all I can remember.
ZzzZzzZZzz!!
