BJJ Class 130
Early afternoon no-gi class. I came in tired, since I stayed up late working on fixing up this blog’s template/theme (not done yet), working on a new BJJ website (not launched yet), and schoolwork (where my brain doesn’t cooperate and always decides to call out sick).
Cause of subway delays I came to class late. I changed as soon as I arrived and joined the warm-ups, but I was too late. I only managed to join in for the very last stretch (and just for one leg too!!).
Class moved to techniques, which was from butterfly guard. Scoot in and go for the double underhooks. Your opponent blocks you by posting on your chest/shoulders, you abandon the double underhooks and go for an armdrag. Spread your legs out to flatten out your opponent with your leg hooks, and change arm grips for an over-under so you can get ready to get the back. Open guard situational sparring followed.
What I did right:
- I feel like I didn’t do much right
- I did get to sweep a purple belt and managed to sneak in some reversals throughout my rolls
What I did wrong:
- Just about everything
- My head was always very exposed and I kept getting guillotined and tapping to other related submissions
- My head, my head, my head. Maybe it’s because I’m seated against a standing opponent that my head’s so exposed, but I couldn’t seem to find a way for it to not get caught
- Being under side-control sucks, somehow I always manage to get an arm caught across my chest/neck. I dunno why that happens, I’m always conscious of keeping my arms in with T-rex arms…
- After trying a few seconds, I forget to lift my hips when going for a triangle. Hence, I’m unable to finish
- Didn’t roll with any bigger guys
In between rolling, one of the brown belts pulled everyone together to discuss some techniques:
- When playing open/ butterfly guard, you have to be very active and constantly attacking
- Also, concentrate on the arms and try not to go flat on your back
- Attack the arms
- When standing against butterfly guard, try to attack the legs most, and if possible, attack high and low at the same time (attack legs and upper body)
- When standing, don’t attack the arms as it only makes it better for the guy in butterfly
- Try to pass from outside the guard, rather than get inside the guard then struggle to get out and pass
Anyway, I’m tired and I have to get ready for a weekend snowboarding trip. Oh, and it’s my birthday too, by the way. Happy MLK weekend!!
