BJJ Class 129
Feels like I’ve been off the mats for awhile. Sucks.
Early afternoon gi class. Started with a lengthy 45-minute warm-up. Techniques followed. It was two single-leg take downs from seated guard. The main technique required a twisting trick that I couldn’t get down exactly, while the other technique was a counter for if your opponent bases out and you can’t reach the far thigh. It was very similar to Open guard to single leg. Or something, which is the first technique I ever illustrated with my snowboard instructors. That technique was first learned a long time ago, but the single-leg takedown from seated guard (or something) has become my go-to move for when my opponent stands up. I don’t always do the technique right, but I get the main ideas of the technique:
- Isolate a single leg
- Secure foot by the ankle
- Push diagonally outward on the shin below the knee
- Take opponent down
- Grin a little
Specific round-robin rolling followed. The base people were to play open guard and go practice the technique or whatever, while the other side was to play a passing game. After everyone rotated, the base people switched roles. While playing open-guard against a purple belt my head got smashed in. My head somehow was flat on the mat (I guess I was trying to take him down), with an ear facing straight up and he landed his weight through his knee on my ear and on my head. I got disoriented, which was bad timing cause I rolled with my coach next. Rolling with my instructor, I got the technique right on the first get-go cause he let me, then the rest of the round was a tap clinic. I guess the blow on the ear didn’t really matter since it would have been a tap clinic anyway.
What I did right:
- I think I played a good top game, was swept just a few times
- I managed to pass guard with the stack pass and almost a few times with other techniques
- I got the back twice, though only with new blue belts
- After having my head smashed, I fought on despite the ringing in my ears and slight loss of awareness.
What I did wrong:
- When completing a takedown, I sometimes waited a while before moving up to secure mount or side control. Delaying was bad cause it opened up my back to being taken
- Trouble doing anything with big blue V
Can’t remember the rest. Oh well.
