BJJ Class 125

Afternoon gi class. Class started with some light warm-ups, then we moved on to techniques.

Technique was a butterfly guard sweep where you scoot in and get both underhooks with your arms, then as your opponent pummels one arm in, you take advantage of the situation by scooting forward a little bit more then lifting him up with your legs and sweeping him over to the side where your opponent has no base (the side where he pummeled his arm in) and get mount. A variation is one where, as you lift your opponent up, you straighten one of your legs up and get cross-guard, and then use the trapped leg to set-up a pass. After rereading this paragraph, I don’t think it makes much sense to anyone other than myself.  Oh well…

Several rounds of rolling followed.  I rolled with all belt levels (except black) and weight classes, including, yup, one guy heavier than me.

(I’m going to start using bullet points when doing this section from now on)

What I did right:

  • Overall, I maintained a good base – I feel like I have a good base.
  • I varied my pass attempts, which was good.
  • I swept a brown belt and got complements from it.  One problem with doing techniques with higher belts though is that you never really think you really, legitimately got it – they’re always trying something, they let you, or they want to experiment, etc.  So I dunno….
  • I defended well when pinned on the bottom.

What I did wrong:

  • I need to work on passing when the opponent plays open/butterfly guard.  I need to improve my technique if I bring both legs together, as their free upper body tends to halt the progression of the pass. Also, I’m having difficulty safely underhooking a leg.  There is also a shoulder plant pass that I could use, but I have to learn and drill that pass technique.
  • Still having difficulty working my bottom game against someone heavier than myself.  I know I should be working on my passes, as per my goals, but getting to play top game with these guys doesn’t happen much.
  • I went for a single-leg and got caught in a guillotine.  Need to work on head position.

Ok for now….
